Authorities release more details on crash that killed Tivy high school student, football player

KERRVILLE, Texas – New details have been released by the Texas Department of Public Safety on a two-vehicle crash on IH-10 that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Tivy High School student and sent two more to hospital .

The accident happened Thursday night on IH-10 in the Kerrville area.

Authorities said a Ford pickup truck with four people inside was moving east on the IH-10 at high speed. The truck had to take quick action to avoid hitting another vehicle, a Kia, from behind, so it swerved to the left.

The truck still collided with the Kia before veering through the center median and entering a ravine, rolling the truck several times, officials said.

The Tivy HS student was a passenger in the truck and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the DPS. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Staff at Tivy High School identified the 17-year-old killed in Friday’s crash as senior David Palestrant, who was also a member of Tivy’s football team.

Although he was not scheduled to play in the team’s Friday game against Alamo Heights due to a foot injury, school officials said he would be walking the field with his parents for the senior evening.

The driver of the van was not injured and the other two passengers were taken to the university hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

David Jones, the head coach of the THS football team, said after consulting with school staff and team members, they decided to continue Friday’s game despite the circumstances. .
