‘State of education’ 2019-2020: increase in eligibility for high school diploma

The Ministry of Education on Monday released its annual “State of Education” report for the 2019-2020 school year, in which it recorded a 3.7% increase in eligibility for a diploma. high school despite the advent of the coronavirus. The ministry reduced the number of required registration exams to five and reduced the amount of material in each exam. He did not say why the figures for the 2019-2020 school year were not released until October 2021.

The data was based on questionnaires completed by students and was divided into three groups: Learning and Achievement, Values ​​and Educational Climate, and Perseverance vs. Stall.

Some 73.4% of Israeli students who completed high school in 2020 were eligible for a degree, up 3.7% from 2019.

Distributed by population group, 75.8% of Jewish high school graduates were eligible, 69.4% of Israeli-Arab students (excluding East Jerusalem, where the majority of students take exams administered by the Palestinian Authority), were eligible, 89.2% of Druze students and 58.1% of Bedouin students were eligible.

In the Jewish education system, 83.9% of general high schools, 85.9% of national-religious schools, and 24% of Haredi students were eligible.

An increase of 2.4% was recorded for pupils who reached maximum level 5 in English (from 39.1% to 41.5%). The percentage of students who completed level 5 in mathematics remained virtually the same as the previous year (15.5% to 15.6%).

The report indicated a decrease in certain educational parameters.

Ability, curiosity and interest in studies increased from 52% to 49%, the quality of teaching increased from 56% to 53% and the quality of student assessment of teachers also increased. from 56% to 53%.

The dropout rate fell from 1% in the 2018-2019 school year to 0.6% in the 2019-2020 year, which is interesting given the dramatic increase in learning online and reduced physical engagement in person. The report included a caveat that due to distance learning during blockages participation was not taken, making these statistics open to debate.

Furthermore, while the encouragement of educators for social and civic engagement has significantly decreased from 60% to 54%, the “overall positive study environment” has increased slightly – from 70% to 71%. Reports of violence in schools have remained largely the same.
