Students from Chagrin Falls schools recognized for their academic success

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – More than 80 students were recognized for maximizing their potential for academic success at the Chagrin Falls school board meeting on Wednesday, November 3.

Becky Quinn, district curriculum director and gifted coordinator, described the students’ accomplishments and called them out for recognition.

Chagrin Falls High School high school students Sophia Avery, Alexandra Holtz and Carter Kilby were honored for winning the Academic All-American Award from the National Speech and Debate Association.

The NSDA only recognizes 2 percent of student members nationwide with this award. It is presented to students who, through the accumulation of points, have obtained the Diploma of Superior Distinction, have completed at least five semesters of high school, have demonstrated outstanding character and leadership, and have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 on a scale of 4.0 and / or a 3.5 to 3.7 GPA with an ACT score of 27 or higher or a new SAT score of 1300 or higher.

Nine students from Chagrin Falls High School who took the PSAT / NMSQT in October 2020 have been identified as semifinalists for the 2022 National Merit Scholarship. They are Robert (Trey) Brosnan, Matthew Daniels, Rose Hoelzel , Alexandra Holtz, Anne Mills, Azzurra (Wren) Opperman, Joshua Rooney, Hansen Song and Jude Zimmerman.

These students will compete for a share of 7,600 scholarships worth more than $ 31 million. The finalists will be announced between April and July.

Additionally, these four students from Chagrin Falls High School took the PSAT / NMSQT in October 2020 and have been identified as recommended students by the National Merit Scholarship: Sophia Avery, David Skocic, Calvin Struk-Marn and Trey Taylor.

In Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS), the highest-scoring students in each of the three grade levels in 2020-21 have been recognized. This is Claire Rubin, sixth; Jacob Kay, seventh year; and Grace Mossad, eighth grade.

NUMATS is a research-validated, above-grade testing program that offers ACT and SAT to identified eligible gifted students. These tests are internationally recognized measures of academic ability designed for older students.

Bridging is a program that provides content for students who have shown themselves ready to move on to advanced math and / or science courses. It is designed to provide a “bridge” to avoid skipping content by speeding up lessons.

Seventeen students worked through last summer to complete the math transition and move on to a more rigorous math program this fall.

In addition, 48 students worked from spring to summer to complete the Physics Transition Program, showing that they were ready to complete the Physics to earn high school credits as students. high school this school year.

District goals discussed

Also at the November 3 meeting, Quinn and Jennifer Bencko, district director of student services, discussed the district’s goals for 2021-2022.

The district’s school success goal is to implement strategic academic initiatives that achieve the highest possible rating – five stars – on the Ohio State Report Card of Achievement.

In the area of ​​curriculum review and improvement, art, music, health and physical education from kindergarten to grade 12, AP World History , US government AP and French 4 / AP French Language will be embarking on a year-long curriculum review and improvement process.

Curriculum maps will be created for all grade levels and revised courses in K-12 World Languages, English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies classes by the end of this school year.

Common assessments will be developed for all grade levels and revised courses in K-12 world languages, ELA and social studies courses by the end of the 2022-23 school year. .

In the area of ​​assessment mastery, the development, identification and use of best assessment practices will be addressed throughout this school year.

Literacy assessment practices will be identified and refined to meet the expectations of the Ohio Teacher Assessment System (OTES) 2.0 JK-12 by the end of this school year.
