Why should you be elected?

The village of Yellow Springs nurtured me as I became a new citizen and mom, and it’s time for me to give back. As a new voter, I realized that keeping up with local government is out of reach for most citizens. In fact, I found myself being a sort of interpreter or reporter for other villagers who wanted to know but couldn’t personally attend the various meetings. I was happy to do the research, share my findings and put my skills to work for others. I want to bring the same energy, the same attention to detail, listening and communication skills to my position with the School Board.

The three main priorities:

First, we need to bring the community together around a sustainable solution for our facilities. Our current buildings are undeniably worn out and we expect to have to invest substantially, no matter which route we take. The problem can be polarizing in our community, and I want to help find a solution. This includes separating the issue of the fate of the Mills Lawn property from the proposal to build a new K-12. Let’s hear what the villagers envision for the future of Mills Lawn which would preserve our town’s character, and continue to reflect on the advantages of a new building over a piecemeal renovation plan.

Second, we have a large student body, around 15%, that needs housing, through an IEP or whatever. The process of making these accommodations can be arduous and frustrating. I am encouraged by the recent changes announced by Dr Holden, such as our participation in the PINE program, and it is essential that the Board follow this issue closely.

Third, we have had a fairly high turnover of staff in our school district over the past few years. This is not necessarily out of step with national trends, as the pandemic has caused some teachers to reconsider their options. However, we missed the opportunity to gather feedback through exit interviews. This is just one example of small changes we can make to make ourselves a better employer.

Biography:

I am a villager, educator, and parent of a Mills Lawn student and preschooler. I grew up in a small rural town in Normandy, France. While my parents wanted me to take over the family farm in Normandy, I preferred a career in teaching. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a country where higher education is accessible, even for first generation students like me, and I successfully completed a bachelor’s degree in history while working part-time as a camp counselor. year-round for the city after-school care programs. I took advantage of the European student exchange program (Erasmus program) and went to study abroad for a year at the Universität Tübingen in Germany. I then enrolled for a Masters at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg and wrote a thesis on post-1945 attempts to rehabilitate Alsatian children, who had undergone the brainwashing programs of young Hitlerites during WWII. world while Alsace was annexed by Germany. This is where I heard that Purdue University was looking for native French speakers to come and teach in Indiana. Eager to gain more teaching experience and acquire another language, I signed up for this opportunity and eventually stayed to pursue a PhD in History at Purdue University. I met my wife there and got a lecturer position teaching online history at Purdue University after getting my PhD. in 2012 (My thesis focused on the teaching of modern languages ​​as an unofficial tool of diplomacy in the interwar period in France and the United States). We are welcoming our first child in 2013 and moved to Yellow Springs with our baby after my partner accepted a post-doctoral position at WPAFB. Our second child was born in Yellow Springs in 2017.

Since I moved to Yellow Springs in 2014, I have become a US citizen. This ended 12 years of being an immigrant taxpayer with little representation in the United States and opened the door to all civic rights and duties. I believe that my civic duty is to be an informed and thoughtful voter. As a new voter, I realized that keeping up with local government is out of reach for most citizens.
